The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a heat
advisory, which is in effect from 11 am this morning to 8 PM EDT
* Heat index values... up to 108 due to temperatures in the mid
90s, and dewpoints in the lower 70s.
* Timing... heat indices will climb above 100 degrees by noon
today and remain dangerous into the early evening.
* Impacts... high heat and humidity will increase the risk for heat
exhaustion and even heat stroke if precautionary measures are
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
To reduce the risk of heat illness during outdoor work, the
occupational safety and health administration recommends
scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned
environments. Complete as much outdoor work as possible during the
early morning or late evening hours.
Ensure all outdoor animals have adequate shade and fresh water.
When possible, bring pets and livestock into cooler dwellings
during the period of highest temperatures.
