... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST Sunday...
* what... heavy snow expected. Some sleet and freezing rain may
briefly occur across the southern Berkshires, southeast
Catskills, the capital region and portions of the Mid-Hudson
valley that includes Columbia County. Up to a tenth of an inch
of ice is possible in these spots with up to two tenths of an
inch possible in the southern Berkshires near the Connecticut
border. Light accumulations of sleet on top of the snow are
possible in the capital region to northern Berkshires and
southern Vermont. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches.
Some snow totals across the western and central Mohawk Valley,
southern Adirondacks, Lake George to parts of the southern Green
Mountains in southern Vermont may approach or exceed 2 feet.
Winds will gust to 20 to 35 mph Sunday afternoon with some
blowing and drifting snow.
* Where... southern Vermont, western Massachusetts, and the
greater capital region, Lake George Saratoga region, southern
Adirondacks, Mohawk Valley, Schoharie valley, helderbergs,
eastern Catskills, and northern and central Taconics in east
central New York.
* When... snow will become heavy at times this evening, continuing
through tonight. Snow will mix with sleet in the capital
district, Berkshires, central and northern Taconics and southern
Vermont before sunrise. Freezing rain will mix in over the
Berkshires and central Taconics, eastern Catskills and Mid
Hudson valley by sunrise. Mixed precipitation ends as snow
showers midday Sunday through Sunday afternoon.
* Additional details... travel will be very difficult to impossible
across the region tonight through Sunday morning with snow or
ice covered roadways and very low visibility in heavy snow.
Snowfall rates will be 1 to 3 inches an hour at times tonight
into Sunday morning. The potential for blowing and drifting snow
will increase Sunday afternoon into the evening with wind chills
falling well below zero. Accumulating ice could result in downed
tree limbs and isolated power outages.
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet
and ice will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
