... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to
10 am EST Friday...

* what... mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of
1 to 2 inches, mainly at the higher elevations. Ice
accumulations generally less than one tenth of an inch.

* Where... the mountains of North Carolina, up through the Grayson
Highlands and along the southern Blue Ridge, into portions of
the New River, Roanoke, Rover, and Shenandoah valleys.

* When... from 1 PM this afternoon to 10 am EST Friday. The
precipitation is expected to begin as snow during the afternoon
then mix with or change to sleet and freezing rain this evening.

* Additional details... plan on slippery Road conditions. The
hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery
roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

... Wintry mix beginning early afternoon...

An upper level disturbance over the Tennessee and
lower Ohio valleys will move east today, passing
through the mid-Atlantic region tonight. A wintry
mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will accompany
this weather system, beginning across the high country of North
Carolina, and far western virgina early this afternoon. Lower
elevations are expected to receive less than an inch of snow, with
a couple inches possible at the highest elevations before
changing to rain or freezing rain. If temperatures remain below 32
degrees then, some ice accretion will be possible. Areas along
the Blue Ridge Parkway will likely see the greatest ice
accumulation with up to a tenth of an inch possible.
