... Beach hazards statement remains in effect until 5 PM EDT /4 PM
CDT/ this afternoon...
* high wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected...
* strong longshore currents expected...
* strong structural currents expected...
* rip currents possible...
* overview/potential impacts... wave heights of 3 to 5 feet will
gradually diminish to 2 to 4 feet by late this afternoon. Wave
periods of 5 to 6 seconds, in combination with a nearly shore-
parallel wave angle of approach, will lead to strong longshore
and structural currents. Rip currents are also possible.
Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.
Longshore currents form as wave action intersects the shoreline at
an angle, forcing the water to flow parallel to, or along the
shoreline. Strong longshore currents can make it difficult to
keep your footing, and can force you down the beach into more
hazardous locations or other dangerous currents.
Structural currents form along piers where longshore
currents and wave action flow into the structure. Structural
currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier
