... The importance of particularly dangerous situation convective
watches issued by the Storm Prediction Center...

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a p d S Severe Thunderstorm
Watch 280 from now through midnight tonight for southern
Illinois, west Kentucky, southwest Indiana, and part of southeast
Missouri.

There are rare occasions when the Storm Prediction Center in
Norman Oklahoma will issue tornado or severe thunderstorm watches
emphasizing that this is a particularly dangerous situation.
These unique p d S or particularly dangerous situation convective
watches are issued when there is a widespread and significant
threat to life and property.

Although normal used for intense tornado events, the enhanced
wording may also be found in severe thunderstorm watches for
exceptionally intense and well organized convective wind storms,
such as derechoes.

The decision to issue a particularly dangerous situation or p d S
convective watch is at the discretion of the Storm Prediction
Center forecaster when atmospheric conditions are quite hazardous.
P d S watches are most likely to be issued in a moderate or high
risk area indentified in convective outlooks issued by the Storm
Prediction Center.

If you find your home, school, or business is placed under a p d
S watch, make sure your emergency actions plans are ready for
immediate use. If a tornado or Severe Thunderstorm Warning is
issued, take cover immediately. Do not waste time looking for
threatening weather, you may end up losing your life.

... Safety rules for severe thunderstorms...

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch 276 has been issued by the National
Weather Service for all of southwest Indiana, west Kentucky,
southern Illinois, and the rest of southeast Missouri, not
included in a Tornado Watch. This watch is in effect until
9 PM CDT.

This Severe Thunderstorm Watch does include the possibility of
tornadoes, so remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.

The following safety tips are being provided in the
hope that the broadcast media will frequently broadcast these
messages while the watch affects their area. A Severe Thunderstorm
Watch means conditions are favorable for the development of
severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. If you are in
the watch area, keep up to date of the latest weather
information. These storms can develop rapidly, so there may be
occasions when advance warning is not possible.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means a severe thunderstorm has been
observed or indicated by radar. If you are in the path of or near
a storm, take immediate actions to protect life and properly.
Follow these safety rules:

In open country, you should seek shelter and avoid tall trees
which be targets for lightning. If there is no shelter, go to a
ditch or culvert, but be aware of rising water which can cause
flooding.

When indoors, stay away from outside walls and windows and go to
an interior room on the lowest level. Avoid using electrical
appliances while the storm is nearby.

In Mobile homes, you should leave and seek nearby safe shelter.

If swimming or on a boat, you should get to shore as quickly as
possible and find shelter.

A thunderstorm is considered severe when it contains one inch or
larger diameter size hail and/or wind gusts of 58 miles an hour or
greater. A severe thunderstorm also produces deadly lightning and
very heavy rain which can lead to flash flooding.

Remember, with any severe thunderstorm, there is always the
possibility of tornadoes.
