Winter Storm Watch

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Wednesday afternoon through
late Wednesday night above 7000 feet...

* what... heavy snow possible above 7000 feet. Total snow
accumulations of 6 to 12 inches above 8000 feet. Between 7000
and 8000 feet 4 to 8 inches are possible with 4 inches or less
below 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph through
passes and over ridge lines.

* Where... greater Lake Tahoe area and Mono County.

* When... from Wednesday afternoon through late Wednesday night.

* Additional details... travel could be very difficult over the Mt
rose Highway, Carson Pass and Monitor Pass. Expect Ebbetts Pass,
Sonora pass and Tioga Pass to close. Holiday travelers should be
prepared for long delays on Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and
car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry
tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm
arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended
period of time.

... Travel impacts likely across the Sierra and western Nevada
Wednesday to Friday...

With it being a busy Holiday travel period, the anticipated
weather could bring significant impacts to travel in the Sierra.
It is best to have a winter travel kit and plan for potentially
long delays Wednesday-Friday.

Wednesday and Wednesday night: first of two storms will bring a
period of rain and snow to the region starting in the afternoon.
Heaviest rain and mountain snow could move through the region
during the evening commute. Best advice is to travel over the
Sierra passes Wednesday morning or by early Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday into friday: stronger storm possible with high winds
impacting air and ground travel across western Nevada. Periods of
heavy rain and snow possible for the northern Sierra, including
the Tahoe basin and Carson Pass. Minimal amounts of rain and snow
will reach Mono County. Have an alternate set of travel plans, if
possible consider delaying travel until Saturday or Sunday.
